I Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso e l’Università di Princeton nel New Jersey, USA, annunciano la settima edizione della "Scuola estiva di fisica Gran Sasso-Sud Dakota-Princeton". Il programma prevede corsi dal 17 luglio al 7 agosto 2010 presso l’Università di Princeton. L'iniziativa è aperta, tramite concorso, a studenti delle scuole superiori della Regione Abruzzo, che siano attualmente iscritti al quarto e quinto anno, e che abbiano un reale e specifico interesse nelle materie scientifiche, nella fisica nonchè una discreta conoscenza della lingua inglese. Ai partecipanti saranno offerti vitto e alloggio all’interno del campus di Princeton e il biglietto aereo di andata e ritorno.
Le attività a Princeton consisteranno in lezioni di fisica e astrofisica collegate alle ricerche condotte presso i Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, corsi di laboratorio e di lingua inglese. Le lezioni saranno tenute in italiano.
Un numero di 20 studenti sarà selezionato tramite concorso. Preferenza verra' data agli studenti del quarto anno. Anche in questa edizione parteciperanno alla Scuola estiva dieci studenti del sud Dakota che trascorreranno una settimana presso i LNGS per poi raggiungere l'Università di Princeton aggregandosi al gruppo degli studenti italiani selezionati. Il Sud Dakota è lo stato americano dove è stata proposta la realizzazione di un laboratorio di fisica simile al Gran Sasso.

La domanda dovrà essere accompagnata da un breve saggio (1 o 2 pagine) in cui lo studente spiega i motivi del suo interesse per la scuola estiva, da una copia della pagella scolastica dell’anno precedente e da una lettera di presentazione (in busta chiusa) del professore di fisica o scienze. I candidati, dopo aver inviata la domanda compilata come precedentemente illustrato, dovranno presentarsi a sostenere una prova scritta, MUNITI DI DOCUMENTO DI RICONOSCIMENTO, che contribuirà alla loro valutazione il giorno 19 aprile 2010 alle ore 11.00 presso i Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso ad Assergi (AQ).
La prova scritta avrà la durata massima di 2 ore e verterà sugli argomenti di seguito elencati che sono contenuti nei programmi scolastici dei trienni della scuola secondaria superiore:
- Aritmetica, Termologia, Geometria, Elettrologia, Chimica, Meccanica e Ottica. Durante la prova sarà consentito l'utilizzo di: calcolatrice, squadra/righello e compasso.
ATTRAZIONI LOCALI
Princeton è una piacevole città universitaria ad un’ora di treno da New York e Filadelfia. Princeton offre molte attrazioni durante il periodo estivo.
Gli studenti avranno alcuni pomeriggi e il fine settimana liberi per visitare la regione e per godere l’atmosfera di uno dei più bei campus negli USA. Il prestigio di Princeton si deve alla qualità dei suoi docenti, tra i quali si annoverano molti premi Nobel. Einstein visse e lavorò a Princeton per ben trent’anni.
Tra le attrazioni storiche segnaliamo il campo di battaglia di Princeton, dove il generale Washington sconfisse gli Inglesi durante la rivoluzione Americana.
Gli studenti italiani avranno l’opportunità di effettuare visite guidate a New York, Philadelphia e Washington nei fine settimana.

GRAN SASSO-SOUTH DAKOTA-PRINCETON
PHYSICS SUMMER SCHOOL SUMMER 2010
The Gran Sasso National Laboratories and Princeton University, New Jersey, USA, are proud to announce the Gran Sasso-South Dakota-Princeton School of Physics 2010. This school will take place at Princeton University between July 17 and August 7, 2010. The program is open to students enrolled in the fourth and fifth year of high schools located in Abruzzo. A number of 20 students will be selected on a competitive basis giving preference to fourth year students. The participants in the program will be offered air transportation to and back from Princeton and full accommodation and board in the Princeton campus. The activities in Princeton will include: physics courses in the field of physics and astrophysics that the Gran Sasso Laboratory is involved with, laboratory activities, and English courses. Physics classes will be offered in Italian. As in 2009 also the new edition will see the participation of ten South Dakota students wich, after a brief period at Gran Sasso National Laboratories, will join the Italian students to reach Princeton University. South Dakota is the US State where the realization of a physics laboratory, similar to Gran Sasso, has been proposed.
ADMISSION RULES
Students interested in the program should submit their application by April 7, 2010. The application must be submitted in writing to:

The letter should be accompanied by a short essay (1-2 pages) where the student explains the reasons of his/her interest in the program. A photocopy of the school report cards of past academic year should be included. Students must also arrange to have a letter of recommendation by their physics professor. Candidates will have to undertake a written examination on April 19, 2010 - 11.00 a.m., at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory. The test will deal with physics, math and chemistry programs of high school.
LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
Princeton is a small and pleasant university town located one hour by train from New York City and Philadelphia. Princeton offers a lot of attractions during the summer.
Students will have weekends and some afternoons free to explore one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States.
Princeton fame is mainly due to the high standard of the teaching staff, among which several Nobel Prize. Even Einstein lived and worked in Princeton for 30 years.
Among local attractions, the battlefield where Washington defeated the English troops during the American Revolution.
Guided tours to New York, Philadelphia and Washington are scheduled at week ends.
